Isn't it a pity that 90% of people spend their lives never looking up?
It is a pity because they miss so much of what is inspiring about the everyday architecture of suburban Britain.
Few of the remaining 10% will have much idea of the technical difficulty of creating a pyramidal glass roofed entrance hall.
The roof is constructed from aluminium extrusions and plate glass.
The effect is to set a different expectation on entering the supermarket.
Instead of an unpleasantly artifically lit and air conditioned environment, customers are greeted with a flood of natural light.
The result is strong on brand associations.
M&S has spent large in defending a brand position as a quality supplier with a consicence.
Those brand values are subtly upheld by the quality of the finished roof - a difficult technical challenge, but, like a good climb, worth the effort for the view.
